How to Get Barrows Gloves as an Ironman: Recipe for Disaster Requirements, Subquest Order, Prep & Final Fight

How to get Barrows gloves on an OSRS ironman: every Recipe for Disaster requirement, the subquest order, items to prep, chest glove tiers and the final fight.

25 min read·Updated ·Difficulty: ***

Barrows gloves are the gloves you will wear for most of your ironman account, and they take the longest quest chain in the early game to unlock. You can't buy your way past it on an iron: every fishbowl, greegree, stew and vanilla pod is something you make or gather yourself, and the final fight bans Prayer.

This page is the requirements and prep reference. The step-by-step route is in our Diaries and finishing RFD section (1.5), which slots every subquest into the Oziris order and finishes with "Finish RFD, buy B gloves". Use this page to check your stats, bank the right items, and know what each of the six final bosses does before you walk in. Every number below comes from the OSRS Wiki, checked as of October 2026.

The short version

  1. 175 quest points for the final fight, 107 for Sir Amik Varze.
  2. Three levels can't be boosted: 48 Agility (Awowogei), 53 Thieving (Desert Treasure I) and 40 Ranged (Temple of Ikov). Everything else can be boosted.
  3. Prep the items while you do the prerequisite quests: a second dramen branch during Lost City, a vanilla pod during Legends' Quest, three extra greegrees during Monkey Madness I.
  4. No Prayer in any of the six final fights, and none of them is a safe death.
  5. The gloves cost 130,000 coins from the Culinaromancer's Chest (104,000 with the Elite Lumbridge & Draynor Diary).

Barrows gloves requirements

Barrows gloves need the whole of Recipe for Disaster: the opening chapter, all eight council-member subquests, and the final fight. The wiki's requirement list for the full quest includes the prerequisite quests, so these are the highest levels you need anywhere in the chain:

Recipe for Disaster: full requirements

  • 175 Quest pointsTo start the final fight
  • 70 CookingBoostable (Awowogei)
  • 59 MagicBoostable (Family Crest)
  • 53 FishingBoostable (Heroes' Quest)
  • 53 ThievingNot boostable (Desert Treasure I)
  • 50 MiningBoostable (Heroes' Quest)
  • 50 FiremakingBoostable (Desert Treasure I)
  • 48 AgilityNot boostable (Awowogei)
  • 40 SmithingBoostable (Family Crest)
  • 40 CraftingBoostable (Family Crest)
  • 40 RangedNot boostable (Temple of Ikov)
  • 36 WoodcuttingBoostable (Lost City)
  • 25 HerbloreBoostable (Heroes' Quest)
  • 10 FletchingBoostable (The Tourist Trap)

Connect your account in the header to auto-check these requirements.

Two details the summary list hides:

  • Magic is really 50 unboosted. Family Crest's 59 can be boosted, but Desert Treasure I needs 50 Magic and the wiki marks that one as not boostable.
  • The 40 Ranged can be bypassed. Temple of Ikov lists it as unboostable, but the quest page notes you can skip it by using darts or throwing knives against the Fire Warrior of Lesarkus.

You do not need to finish Legends' Quest. RFD only needs it started far enough to reach the Kharazi Jungle, and starting it needs 107 quest points and its prerequisite quests, not its skill levels.

Our quest order lists these in sequence with their own requirements.

Ironman-only extras

A main can buy their way past these items. An ironman makes them, which adds a few levels from the wiki's ironman notes and item pages:

Extra levels an ironman needs

  • 42 CraftingFishbowl for Pirate Pete (Rum Deal also needs 42)
  • 17 SmithingIron spit for Skrach Uglogwee
  • 4 SmithingBronze wire for Pirate Pete
  • 50 MiningBoostable; to reach the Ice Queen for ice gloves
  • 25 CookingTo cook stews for Evil Dave, or buy them
  • 5 FletchingOgre arrows for Skrach Uglogwee

Every subquest in ironman order

The order below is the one the wiki's ironman quest guide uses. The easy subquests go first because each council member you free raises the stock in the Culinaromancer's Chest, and the chest sells the milk, eggs, flour, cream and cake tins several later subquests need. Our step-by-step route does the same subquests inside the Oziris order.

1. Another Cook's Quest

Needs Cook's Assistant and 10 Cooking. Bring an eye of newt, a greenman's ale (Dragon Inn, Yanille), a rotten tomato (Pelters' Veg Stall in Varrock, Seers' Village, Yanille or Hosidius) and a dirty blast, which is a fruit blast with ashes added. A premade fr' blast does not work. Make the fruit blast at the Grand Tree from Hudo's lemons, pineapple and orange, or take the one the Varrock Museum curator offers for your level 3 certificate from The Dig Site. Finishing this opens the dining room and the Culinaromancer's Chest.

2. Freeing the Goblin generals

Needs Goblin Diplomacy. Bring bread, orange slices, a dye (blue, black, green or purple; the wiki's ironman guide uses blue), spice or gnome spice, fishing bait, a bucket of water and charcoal. The chest sells spice. Charcoal is sold in Shilo Village, Jiminua's Jungle Store and Gunslik's Assorted Items, and a purple dye spawns east of the spirit tree at the Khazard Battlefield.

3. Freeing the Mountain Dwarf

Needs Fishing Contest. Bring a bucket of milk, a pot of flour, an egg (all from the chest), a bowl of water, about 306 coins and gloves. Buy four Asgarnian ales at the Rising Sun Inn in Falador (bring two spares in case Rohak sobers up), or pick them up free at The Toad and Chicken in Burthorpe. Ice gloves cool the rock cake instantly; without them you have to kill an icefiend on Ice Mountain with the cake in your inventory. Ice gloves drop from the Ice Queen under White Wolf Mountain, are obtainable at level 3, and need a boostable 50 Mining to clear an obstacle on the way. You need them again for Sir Amik and for Flambeed in the final fight, so get them now.

4. Freeing Evil Dave

Needs Gertrude's Cat and Shadow of the Storm. Bring any cat except an overgrown cat (the wiki doesn't recommend kittens or lazy cats, which catch rats slowly) and up to nine stews. Your cat catches hell-rats in Evil Dave's basement in Edgeville for the four coloured spices, and you test doses one stew at a time. The wiki's ironman quest guide says the stews can be bought from The Cloak and Stagger in Shayzien, which stocks five at a time; otherwise cook them at 25 Cooking. Raise the kitten from Gertrude's Cat into a cat before you start. This subquest unlocks spicy stew, which you can use later for the Cooking boost Awowogei needs.

5. Freeing Pirate Pete

Needs 31 Cooking. Bring raw cod, bread, a knife, a pestle and mortar, an empty fishbowl, a needle and three bronze wire. You dive at Port Khazard, which needs your weight under 28 kg, at least five free inventory slots and no cat. Kill five mudskippers for hides, then a crab for its meat. Bring three of each ingredient, because the fishcake can burn and only the cod, bread, kelp and crab meat need replacing.

For the fishbowl, an ironman either blows one from molten glass at 42 Crafting (boostable) or dismantles the fishbowl and net from Rum Deal, which the wiki notes saves an iron the molten glass. Rum Deal needs 42 Crafting itself, so plan on the level either way. Mogres also drop fishbowls. The wiki's ironman quest guide makes seven bronze wire before Creature of Fenkenstrain so four are left over for this and Shilo Village.

6. Freeing the Lumbridge Guide

Needs 40 Cooking and six quests: Big Chompy Bird Hunting, Biohazard, Demon Slayer, Murder Mystery, Nature Spirit and Witch's House. Every item (bucket of milk, egg, pot of flour, cake tin) comes from the chest. Wizard Traiborn in the Wizards' Tower enchants the egg, milk and flour after a quiz for each. Fairy ring DIS or the Guardians of the Rift minigame teleport gets you there.

7. Freeing Skrach Uglogwee

Needs 41 Cooking, 20 Firemaking and Big Chompy Bird Hunting. Bring an axe (not a blessed axe), raw chompy, an iron spit, logs, a tinderbox, a pickaxe, ogre bellows, a ball of wool, an ogre bow and ogre arrows. Rantz sells the ogre bow during the quest for up to 600 coins, but keep the one from Big Chompy Bird Hunting, as the wiki's ironman guide suggests. The iron spit is an iron bar on an anvil at 17 Smithing. You make a balloon toad from a bellows-inflated toad, a rock and wool, use it to lure a jubbly bird, and cook the jubbly on Rantz's spit-roast. Kill and cook spares in case you burn one.

8. Freeing Sir Amik Varze

Needs 107 quest points, Legends' Quest started (you need the Radimus notes to enter the Kharazi Jungle if you haven't finished it), and Family Crest, Heroes' Quest, Shilo Village, Underground Pass and Waterfall Quest. The wiki recommends 70 Combat, an anti-dragon shield and antifire potions.

Bring a bucket of milk and a pot of cream (both from the chest), a pot of cornflour, a vanilla pod, a dramen branch, a pestle and mortar, a raw chicken and ice gloves. Three of those are ironman prep:

  • Dramen branch: the wiki's ironman guide cuts a second one during Lost City. Don't make it into a staff; you crush it into cinnamon.
  • Vanilla pod: grab it while you are in the Kharazi Jungle for Legends' Quest to save a trip.
  • Cornflour: grind sweetcorn at a windmill into an empty pot. Sweetcorn can be picked from the fields south of Civitas illa Fortis in Varlamore without 20 Farming.

Talk to the Cook first, or the Wise Old Man in Draynor Village won't give you the Evil Chicken option. Then use a raw chicken on the shrine in Zanaris, kill one black dragon for a dragon token (there is a safespot just inside the corridor by the entrance for ranged or halberd users), and kill the Evil Chicken for its egg. It hits often with Magic, but for very low damage. Rub the token in Lumbridge or Zanaris to summon K'klik for the flambé, wearing ice gloves; without them you can take up to 50 damage. The anti-dragon shield is free from Duke Horacio in Lumbridge Castle.

9. Freeing King Awowogei

Needs 70 Cooking (boostable), 48 Agility (not boostable) and Monkey Madness I. The wiki recommends 65 Combat, antipoison and food.

You need an M'speak amulet and the gorilla, ninja monkey and zombie monkey greegrees. The cheap ironman way, from the wiki's quest guide, is to do it during Monkey Madness I: get four extra monkey talismans from the Monkey Child, kill a monkey guard, a monkey archer and a zombie monkey for their bones, and have Zooknock make three greegrees on the spot. Keep the fourth talisman for Monkey Madness II. If you skipped that, Tutab on Ape Atoll sells talismans for 1,000 coins each.

Then kill a level 84 Big Snake on Crash Island for its corpse, pick a red banana with a rope and the gorilla greegree, pick tchiki monkey nuts from inside the Agility course with the ninja greegree, and cook the stuffed snake in the Temple of Marimbo, crossing the hot coals with the zombie greegree. The snakes are in a multicombat pit, hit hard and are poisonous, so the wiki advises Protect from Melee. The stuffed snake burns often near 70 Cooking, so collect spare ingredients.

Hitting 70 Cooking with a boost

The wiki's ironman quest guide trains Cooking to 65 and boosts to 70 for this step. Two boosts get you there:

  • Chef's delight(m): boosts Cooking by 2 plus 5% of your level, so it gives exactly +5 at 65. The unaged chef's delight gives 1 plus 5%, which is +4 at 66, also enough. Brewing it needs 54 Cooking and four chocolate dust per batch, and the chest sells chocolate bars to grind.
  • Spicy stew with orange spice: three doses boost by a random -5 to +5, so it may take a few stews. You unlock this in the Evil Dave subquest.

48 Agility can't be boosted at all. The Ape Atoll Agility course checks your real level.

10. Defeating the Culinaromancer

Needs 175 quest points, all eight subquests, Desert Treasure I and Horror from the Deep. Full breakdown in the final fight below.

The Culinaromancer's Chest: glove tiers and food store

The chest sits in the Lumbridge Castle cellar and appears once you have watched the feast cutscene at the end of Another Cook's Quest. It is a bank, a food store and an equipment store in one, and each council member you free unlocks a better pair of gloves. Prices as of October 2026; the Elite Lumbridge & Draynor Diary takes 20% off everything.

Stats are the stab attack, magic attack, melee strength and stab defence values from each item page; melee and ranged attack are equal on every pair. All of these gloves are untradeable.

Don't buy dragon gloves. The wiki points out that they cost the same 130,000 as Barrows gloves for much lower stats. Their only advantage is that they need 107 quest points instead of 175. If you want an upgrade while you finish the quest, rune gloves at 6,500 coins are the cheap stopgap.

The food store stocks chocolate bars, cheese, tomatoes, cooking apples, grapes, pots of flour, a pizza base, eggs, buckets of milk, pots of cream, pats of butter, spice, pie dishes, cake tins, bowls, jugs, pots, empty cups, buckets and empty bucket packs. Stock starts at one of each and rises with every subquest you finish: most items reach 18 after eight subquests and 50 after the full quest. Ironmen have had their own separate food stock since January 2017. For an iron the chocolate bars (13 coins each, ground into chocolate dust for energy potions), eggs, milk and flour are the long-term value.

There is also a set of kitchen weaponry (wooden spoon up to cleaver) with stats from bronze to rune equivalents. It's mostly for fun.

The final fight: six bosses, no Prayer

After you free the last council member, the Culinaromancer flees through a portal and Aris sends you after him. You fight five bosses in a fixed order, then the Culinaromancer himself, who can't be defeated until the first five are dead. Prayer can't be used, but you can leave through the white portals and restock after any boss without losing your place. Three of the bosses are remixes of the Desert Treasure I bosses, and one is the Dagannoth Mother from Horror from the Deep.

Each of her attacks rolls one ranged and one magic hit of up to 20, so up to 40 per attack, and the wiki warns that players with 80 or fewer Hitpoints can die easily with bad luck and slow eating. Her Magic Defence is low and her melee Defence is high, so skip melee. The wiki's suggested armour is the best dragonhide body and chaps you have (or Karil's), a melee helmet such as Barrows, a serpentine helm or a dragon med helm, and a dragonfire shield, granite shield or toktz-ket-xil.

What the wiki says to bring for the whole fight: ice gloves for Flambeed, a Menaphite remedy or restore potions for Karamel's stat drain, the armour and weapons each boss needs, and good healing food such as sharks. Karamel's magic attack also stuns you briefly and drops your run and special attack energy to zero. Our step-by-step route also links the Oziris video of the bosses being killed with the stats the guide gives you at that point.

HCIM, UIM and GIM risk

Hardcore ironmen: none of these fights are safe deaths

The OSRS Wiki's list of safe deaths for Hardcore Ironmen does not include the Culinaromancer's dimension or any other part of Recipe for Disaster, so a death in any of the six final fights costs your Hardcore status. The same goes for the subquest fights: the Big Snakes in their multicombat pit on Crash Island, the Evil Chicken's Lair black dragons, and the prerequisite quest bosses.

You can't practise first. The RFD bosses only appear in the Nightmare Zone (which is a safe death for HCIM, but not for HCGIM) after you finish the quest, apart from the Evil Chicken, which unlocks there after Sir Amik.

What the wiki's numbers mean for a hardcore:

  • The Gelatinnoth Mother is the dangerous one. Up to 40 damage per attack with no Protect prayers. Go in with high Hitpoints and eat early.
  • Flambeed and the Culinaromancer both hit 25. The Culinaromancer's 1-in-3 hit chance ignores your Magic Defence, and he can hit rapid 25s. He has 150 Hitpoints and almost no Defence, so kill him fast.
  • Leave between bosses. Progress is kept, so restock to a full inventory of food after every kill rather than pushing on.
  • Snare and kite. Flambeed can be snared and maged from range, and the wiki's Culinaromancer strategy is to stay out of his reach with ranged or Magic, or freeze him with ice spells or Entangle.

For a death that isn't on the safe list, Aris's warning that your items are "lost forever" is false. No gravestone appears in the world, but the wiki says your items can be reclaimed from Death's Domain as normal.

Ultimate ironmen: the wiki's tip is to die at the nettles in Edgeville before going in, take only the food and weapons you need, and restock between bosses at the Warriors' Guild or from Alfonse the waiter in Brimhaven. Pirate Pete has a weight limit (under 28 kg to dive), and for Sir Amik the wiki advises getting your dramen branch beforehand, because the brulee does not appear in death piles. See the UIM guide for storage.

Hardcore group ironmen lose a group life on any unsafe death, and these fights are unsafe. See the hardcore guide and GIM guide for how deaths are counted.

Why Barrows gloves matter for ironmen

Barrows gloves give +12 to every melee and ranged attack bonus, +6 magic attack, +12 melee strength and +12 to stab, slash, crush and ranged defence (+6 magic defence). The wiki ranks them second for melee, second for ranged and third for magic. No other pair is near the top in all three, which is why they are the default for hybrid setups and switches, such as at the Dagannoth Kings or the Royal Titans.

Confliction gauntlets0-4+20 (+7% magic damage)0Tormented bracelet plus the Mokhaiotl cloth from the Doom of Mokhaiotl

Every upgrade on that list is late-game for an iron: the Alchemical Hydra at 95 Slayer, Nex, a 95 Crafting zenyte bracelet, or the Doom of Mokhaiotl. Until then, Barrows gloves are your best gloves for every style, and even after you get the specialist pairs they stay useful for switches. The wiki's Ironman Guide lists them among the standard early-game milestones alongside the fire cape, fighter torso and dragon defender.

Two more reasons to finish the quest early:

  • Achievement diaries. Buying Barrows gloves is a Hard Lumbridge & Draynor Diary task, and Freeing King Awowogei is required for the Hard Western Provinces Diary and for Monkey Madness II.
  • Sailing. The Diving sea charts, from 38 Sailing, need the fishbowl helmet and diving apparatus from Freeing Pirate Pete (or a Medallion of the Deep). Jagex's pre-launch Sailing post recommended having Pirate Pete's diving gear ready for Sea Charting. See our Sailing guide.

Quest XP you collect along the way

Across the eight subquests, RFD hands out 55,000 fixed XP plus a 20,000 XP lamp at the end, all of it from the wiki's reward lists:

The antique lamp can be banked. The wiki's ironman quest guide puts it on Herblore, as it does with most quest lamps, because Herblore is the slowest skill to train without the Grand Exchange. See the Herblore guide for why.

RFD also unlocks the bank chest under Lumbridge Castle, crab diving, the Evil Chicken's Lair black dragons, hellcats and spicy stews, the ogre boat between Karamja and the Feldip Hills, the Ape Atoll Teleport spell, and the six bosses in the Nightmare Zone.

How RFD fits the ironman route

In our walkthrough, RFD is spread across the early game. You start it in section 1.1 to unlock the bank chest, do Evil Dave in section 1.3, and then section 1.5 does the remaining subquests and finishes with Desert Treasure I and the final fight. After that the walkthrough moves into Goals after Barrows gloves.

The wiki's ironman quest guide lands in a similar place: the subquests are spread across the whole early quest list, and the final fight comes after Desert Treasure I, Legends' Quest and the last two subquests. Either way, Barrows gloves are an early-to-mid-game milestone, not something to rush at low combat. The final fight assumes you can handle level 149 bosses without Prayer, and the Gelatinnoth Mother alone punishes low Hitpoints.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get Barrows gloves in OSRS?

Finish all of Recipe for Disaster, including the final fight against the Culinaromancer, then buy them from the Culinaromancer's Chest in the Lumbridge Castle cellar for 130,000 coins, or 104,000 with the Elite Lumbridge & Draynor Diary. They are untradeable, so ironmen get them exactly the way mains do. The chest also sells a lower tier of gloves for each council member you free: dragon gloves after all eight subquests, Barrows gloves only once the final fight is done.

What are the requirements for Barrows gloves?

Barrows gloves need the whole of Recipe for Disaster. That means 175 quest points to start the final fight, plus 70 Cooking, 59 Magic, 53 Fishing, 53 Thieving, 50 Mining, 50 Firemaking, 48 Agility, 40 Smithing, 40 Crafting, 40 Ranged, 36 Woodcutting, 25 Herblore and 10 Fletching across RFD and its prerequisite quests. The OSRS Wiki marks the Agility, Thieving and Ranged levels as not boostable; the rest can be boosted. The quest prerequisites include Desert Treasure I, Monkey Madness I, Horror from the Deep, Heroes' Quest, Family Crest, Underground Pass, Shilo Village, Big Chompy Bird Hunting and the start of Legends' Quest.

How many quest points do you need for Recipe for Disaster?

You need 175 quest points to start the final subquest, Defeating the Culinaromancer. Freeing Sir Amik Varze needs 107, the same number needed to start Legends' Quest, which that subquest also requires. The wiki counts 9 points from the other parts of RFD and 79 from its required quests, so the rest have to come from other quests. RFD awards 10 quest points in total, one per part.

Is Recipe for Disaster safe for hardcore ironmen?

No. The Culinaromancer's dimension is not on the OSRS Wiki's list of safe deaths, so dying there costs Hardcore status. Prayer is disabled in all six fights, but you can leave between bosses to restock without losing progress. The Gelatinnoth Mother rolls two hits of up to 20 each per attack, and the wiki warns that players with 80 or fewer Hitpoints can die to bad luck and slow eating. The Culinaromancer himself can hit rapid 25s.

What order should an ironman do the RFD subquests in?

The OSRS Wiki's ironman quest guide does Another Cook's Quest, then the Goblin generals, the Mountain Dwarf, Evil Dave, Pirate Pete, the Lumbridge Guide, Skrach Uglogwee, Sir Amik Varze and King Awowogei, and saves the final fight for after Desert Treasure I and Horror from the Deep. The easy subquests come early because every one you finish raises the chest's stock. Sir Amik waits for 107 quest points and Legends' Quest access, and Awowogei waits for 70 Cooking (the wiki trains 65 and boosts) and an unboosted 48 Agility.

Are Barrows gloves best in slot?

They are the best all-round gloves, but no longer the best in any single style. Per the OSRS Wiki they have the second-highest melee offensive bonuses behind ferocious gloves, the second-highest ranged behind zaryte vambraces, and the third-highest magic behind the tormented bracelet and confliction gauntlets. They give +12 to every melee and ranged attack bonus, +6 magic attack, +12 melee strength and +12 to most defences. For an ironman every one of those upgrades is a late-game drop or craft, so Barrows gloves stay in most setups for a long time, especially for hybrid and switch setups.

Can you use Prayer against the Recipe for Disaster bosses?

No. Prayer cannot be used in any of the six bosses in the Culinaromancer's dimension. Plan around food and positioning instead: wear ice gloves for Flambeed or he unequips your weapon, bring restore potions or a Menaphite remedy for Karamel's stat drain, bring air, water, earth and fire runes for the Gelatinnoth Mother, and bring a high-healing food such as sharks.
