Ava's devices are the cape-slot backpacks that catch your arrows and bolts after you fire them. On an ironman that matters more than the stats: every arrow you lose is a bar you smelted and a log you fletched, and the assembler makes each arrow last five shots on average. Getting there takes one easy quest at 30 Ranged, a 75-arrow upgrade at 50, and then Dragon Slayer II plus a Vorkath's head.
Everything here was checked against the OSRS Wiki in October 2026.
The ironman route in four steps
- 30 Ranged: do Animal Magnetism for Ava's attractor. Finish it with 50+ Ranged and you get the accumulator straight away.
- 50 Ranged: give Ava 75 steel arrows plus the attractor or 999 coins for Ava's accumulator.
- Dragon Slayer II, then Vorkath: the head is a 1/50 drop, guaranteed on kill 50. Give Ava the head, 75 mithril arrows and the accumulator or 4,999 coins. You need 70 Ranged to wear the assembler.
- Late game: take Dizana's quiver from the Fortis Colosseum to Ava with your assembler so the quiver saves ammo at the 80% rate.
The Three Devices Compared
All three sit in the cape slot. About 20% of shots always break on impact; the devices differ in how much of the rest they catch.
| Device | Ranged level | Caught | Dropped on floor | Shots per arrow | Ranged attack | Ranged Strength | Defence | What Ava wants |
|---|
| Ava's attractor | 30 | 60% | 20% | 2.5 | +2 | +0 | +2 Magic | Quest reward; 999 coins for a replacement |
| Ava's accumulator | 50 | 72% | 8% | 3.57 | +4 | +0 | +1 slash, +4 Magic | 75 steel arrows plus the attractor or 999 coins |
| Ava's assembler | 70 | 80% | 0% | 5 | +8 | +2 | +1 stab, slash and crush, +8 Magic, +2 Ranged | Vorkath's head, 75 mithril arrows, plus the accumulator or 4,999 coins |
"Shots per arrow" is the wiki's average number of times one piece of ammo is fired before you lose it, assuming you never pick up what lands on the floor. The wiki rates the assembler 1.4 times as efficient as the accumulator, and points out that an attractor user who picks up their dropped arrows reaches the same 80% as an assembler, at the cost of clicking.
- 30 RangedAva's attractor (Animal Magnetism)

The assembler has the second-best Ranged attack bonus of any cape-slot item and is one of the few capes with Ranged Strength. Only Dizana's quiver and its blessed version beat it.
What they save, and what they don't
Per the wiki, the devices recover arrows, bolts, darts, javelins, throwing knives, thrownaxes and toktz-xil-ul. The wiki's ironman Ranged guide adds that they collect atlatl darts from the Eclipse atlatl. They do not save:
- Ammo that is always used up: chinchompas and holy water.
- Weapon charges: Zulrah's scales in the toxic blowpipe, or revenant ether in the webweaver bow.
- Karil's bolt racks, which the ironman Ranged guide notes get no benefit.
- Cannonballs fired from a boat. That is the ballistic attractor's job (see the 2026 changes below).
- Anything at all on free-to-play worlds.
About every 3.5 minutes, if you have moved at least three tiles since the last pickup, each device also "attracts" a piece of metal junk. For the accumulator this is steel arrows 1,975 times in 2,000, and anything it can equip goes into your equipment before your inventory. The attractor pulls iron and the assembler pulls mithril. Right-click Commune on the device to switch the junk off.
The magnet fails when you wear a metal torso. From the wiki's interference table:
| Interferes | Compatible |
|---|
| Ahrim's robetop | Karil's leathertop, Armadyl chestplate |
| Plain iron, steel, mithril, adamant, black and rune platebodies | Void knight top and elite void top |
| Iron, mithril, adamant, black, rune and dragon chainbodies; dragon platebody | Dragon platebody (g), dragon chainbody (g), bronze and white armour, heraldic (h1 to h5) platebodies |
| Dharok's, Guthan's, Torag's and Verac's tops | Fighter torso, Bandos chestplate, Torva platebody |
| Justiciar chestguard; Saradomin, Guthix and Zamorak platebodies | Obsidian platebody, granite body, Oathplate chest, Inquisitor's hauberk |
| Blue Moon, Blood Moon and Eclipse Moon chestplates, Sunfire fanatic cuirass |
Trimmed (t) and gold-trimmed (g) platebodies are split: the iron, steel and mithril versions are compatible, while the adamant, black and rune versions interfere. Most melee bodies an ironman actually trains in, such as the fighter torso, obsidian and Bandos, are compatible. Ahrim's robetop is the one the wiki names in its warning, so watch it in hybrid setups.

All four skills must be real levels to start. The quest rewards 1 quest point, 1,000 Crafting, 1,000 Fletching, 1,000 Slayer and 2,500 Woodcutting XP, plus Ava's attractor if your Ranged is below 50 or Ava's accumulator if it is 50 or higher. It is also required for Dragon Slayer II and the Lumbridge & Draynor Medium Diary. Our walkthrough does it at step 1.3.66, straight after killing tree spirits in the Enchanted Valley for the mithril axe, and it also appears on the quest order page.
Hand it in at 50 Ranged and skip a step
The device you get is decided when you finish the quest. If you are close to 50 Ranged, getting there first means you receive the accumulator directly and never need to find 75 steel arrows for the upgrade.
The ironman item list
Animal Magnetism items
1Mithril axe × 1
1Holy symbol × 1
5Iron bar × 5 (unnoted)
1Ghostspeak amulet × 1
1Hammer × 1
1Hard leather × 1
1Polished buttons × 1
4Bones × 4 (for 20 ecto-tokens)
4Pot × 4 (for 20 ecto-tokens)
4Bucket × 4 (for 20 ecto-tokens)
Bones, pots and buckets become 20 ecto-tokens at the Ectofuntus.
| Item | Where an ironman gets it |
|---|
| Mithril axe | No other axe works. Lunami's Axe Shop in Auburnvale sells it for 520 coins (needs Children of the Sun). Perry's Chop-chop Shop in the Woodcutting Guild sells it for 1,664 coins (60 Woodcutting to enter). You can also smith one at 51 Smithing, or get it from tree spirits in the Enchanted Valley, blue dragons or the Isle of Souls chest (28 Thieving). |
| Holy symbol | Cast an unstrung symbol from a silver bar with a holy mould at a furnace (16 Crafting). Dommik's in Al Kharid and Rommik's in Rimmington sell holy moulds for 5 coins. String it with a ball of wool, then have Brother Jered in the Edgeville Monastery bless it; he is upstairs, so you effectively need 31 Prayer. At 50 Prayer, after Horror from the Deep, a completed holy book blesses it instead. |
| 5 iron bars, unnoted | Smelt iron ore (the quest page lists 15 Mining and 15 Smithing). The wiki also lists a spawn in Thurid's Brain Buckets on the Sunset Coast (Children of the Sun), a spawn in level 18 Wilderness north-west of the Ferox Enclave, dwarves under Falador (1/42.67) and sorting small salvage at 15 Sailing (1/34.42). |
| Ghostspeak amulet | From The Restless Ghost, already required. Morytania legs do not work for this quest. |
| 20 ecto-tokens | Four worships at the Ectofuntus: each takes a bone ground into a pot at the bone grinder plus a bucket of slime from the basement, and pays 5 tokens. Claim the tokens from a ghost disciple while wearing your ghostspeak amulet. |
| Hammer | Rimmington General Store, Drogo's Mining Emporium in the Dwarven Mine, or any of Trader Stan's Trading Posts. |
| Hard leather | Tan a cowhide for 3 coins at Ellis in Al Kharid or the Crafting Guild tanner (40 Crafting), or 5 coins at Sbott in Canifis. |
| Polished buttons | Pickpocket H.A.M. members (15 Thieving, 1/25.5), kill H.A.M. guards (1/27.5), dig level-1 soil during The Dig Site (1/12) or check the Fishing Trawler junk (15 Fishing). Polishing buttons needs 3 Crafting. |
The level 18 Wilderness iron bar spawn is the only part of this list that sends you into the Wilderness. Hardcore ironmen have plenty of other sources, so use those.
The quest in brief
- Talk to Ava, behind the bookcase's secret door on the ground floor of Draynor Manor's west wing. She wants two undead chickens.
- At the undead chicken farm west of the Ectofuntus, run between Alice and her husband Malcolm. Fetch a crone-made amulet from the Old Crone east of the Slayer Tower, then buy two undead chickens from Malcolm for 10 ecto-tokens each.
- Give Ava the chickens. The witch in the manor swaps your 5 iron bars for a selected iron. Hammer it facing north in the centre of the mine north-east of Rimmington to make a bar magnet.
- Turael in Burthorpe turns your mithril axe and holy symbol into a blessed axe. Chop an undead tree near the manor for undead twigs.
- Translate Ava's research notes, then combine the hard leather and polished buttons with her pattern to make the container. Hand it in.
The quest lists no required kills.
Step 2: Ava's Accumulator at 50 Ranged
Once you have 50 Ranged, right-click Ava in Draynor Manor and choose Devices. The upgrade costs 75 steel arrows plus either your attractor or 999 coins. If you bring both, she takes the attractor. Perdu's Lost Property shop also sells the accumulator for 7,000 coins at 50 Ranged, but that is only worth it if you are nowhere near Draynor.
Steel arrows for an ironman:
- Shops: Lowe's Archery Emporium in Varrock stocks 1,000 at a base price of 12 coins, and Brian's Archery Supplies in Rimmington stocks 1,500. Daryl's Ranging Surplus in Shayzien and Arcuani's Archery Supplies in Tal Teklan hold 1,000 each. Ava's own shop has only 10.
- Make them: steel arrowtips at 35 Smithing (15 per steel bar) and steel arrows at 30 Fletching. Five steel bars and 75 headless arrows cover the upgrade.
If you die with the accumulator unprotected it goes to your grave. If you don't reclaim it within an hour, Ava sells you a new one for 999 coins and 75 steel arrows. You can own several devices at once, and Ava's Devices menu lets you buy more than one.
Step 3: Dragon Slayer II
The assembler is a Dragon Slayer II reward, and the quest is a big ironman milestone in its own right. Our walkthrough places it in the Goals after Barrows gloves section. The full prerequisite tree is on the quest order page and the wiki quest page.

- Quests: Legends' Quest, Dream Mentor, A Tail of Two Cats, Animal Magnetism, Ghosts Ahoy, Bone Voyage and Client of Kourend, plus the chains under them. You also need to have started the pyre ship part of Barbarian Training to reach the Ancient Cavern.
- Recommended: 100 combat, and the wiki "strongly recommends" at least 75 Ranged.
- Items an ironman has to source: a cut dragonstone and 2 molten glass, which you blow into an inert locator orb with a glassblowing pipe for Ava to finish during the quest. You also need a goutweed (stealing one from the Troll Stronghold kitchen is the wiki's cheap route), 10 swamp paste, 8 oak planks, at least 12 nails, runes for three Fire Wave or Fire Surge casts, an astral rune, and a Seal of Passage or the elite Fremennik Diary.
- No anti-venom yet? The wiki's ironman note for the quest's Vorkath fight: bring about three regular antipoisons, drink a dose each time he uses venomous dragonfire, and tank the poison.
- Rewards: 5 quest points, 80,000 Smithing, 60,000 Mining, 50,000 Agility and 50,000 Thieving XP, four 25,000 XP combat rewards from Ellen in the Myths' Guild, super antifire potions from Primula, the Lithkren Vault's adamant and rune dragons, ferocious gloves from hydra leather, the post-quest Vorkath, and the right to buy an assembler.
Hardcore ironmen: none of this is a safe death
The wiki's list of safe deaths for Hardcore Ironman Mode does not include Dragon Slayer II's quest fights or post-quest Vorkath. The only related entry is the replay of the Galvek fight from the Pool of Dreams. Read our HCIM guide before Galvek and before your first Vorkath trip.
Step 4: Vorkath's Head
Vorkath lives on Ungael. Talk to Torfinn on the third dock from the west in Rellekka to get there. Vorkath's head is a tertiary drop from the post-quest version:
- Rate: 1/50 per kill, and the wiki confirms it is always dropped on your 50th kill. Mod Ash has confirmed the 50th kill skips the roll rather than adding one, so you cannot get two heads on that kill.
- What that means in practice (our arithmetic from the 1/50 rate): about 32 kills on average, and roughly a 63% chance of the head dropping before kill 50.
- Slayer: Vorkath counts as a blue dragon and a zombie task, so the kills can come while you are on task.
- Deaths: the fight is in an instance. If you die, Torfinn returns your items for 100,000 coins, taken from your bank or Death's coffer. An unsafe death before you collect them deletes everything left with him.
The wiki's suggested stats for the ranged method are 85+ Ranged, 75+ Defence and 70+ Prayer for Piety, or 74+ for Rigour. Its top ranged weapon is the dragon hunter crossbow with ruby and diamond dragon bolts (e). Pair it with an anti-dragon shield or dragonfire ward and Protect from Missiles. At minimum, combine a super antifire with Protect from Magic, or a regular antifire with an anti-dragon shield. Watch for his fireball, which kills outright if it lands on you, and the zombified spawn, which hits for up to 60 if it reaches you. See the boss list and money making pages for how Vorkath fits an ironman's account beyond the head.
Don't spend your first head on anything else
Every other use of Vorkath's head consumes it: 1,000 Prayer XP at the Dark Altar (1,560 with Master Reanimation at 90 Magic), stuffing it for your skill hall, the turquoise Slayer helmet (after buying Undead Head for 1,000 Slayer points), the turquoise dragon hunter crossbow (after the elite Combat Achievement tier) and the ranging cape upgrade. Take the first one to Ava.
Buying the assembler
Bring Ava the head, 75 mithril arrows and either your accumulator or 4,999 coins. If you pay the coins, you keep the accumulator as a spare. The assembler needs 70 Ranged to equip.
Mithril arrows for an ironman:
- Shops: Lowe's Archery Emporium in Varrock stocks 800 at a base price of 32 coins. Brian's Archery Supplies in Rimmington, Daryl's Ranging Surplus in Shayzien, Arcuani's Archery Supplies in Tal Teklan, Dargaud's in the Ranging Guild, the Quality Weapons Shop in Keldagrim and Sian's Ranged Weaponry in Prifddinas also sell them.
- Make them: mithril arrowtips at 55 Smithing (15 per mithril bar) and mithril arrows at 45 Fletching. Five mithril bars cover the upgrade.
The assembler never drops ammo on the floor: 80% comes back automatically and the other 20% breaks. A Masori crafting kit can turn it into the cosmetic Masori assembler, and you can combine it with a max cape to make the assembler max cape.
Losing an assembler costs another head
Ava and Perdu both want a Vorkath's head before they sell you an assembler. Perdu charges 7,000 coins on top. A PvP death, on a PvP world or at any level of the Wilderness, breaks an unprotected assembler, and Perdu repairs it for 240,000 coins. Since the Trouver rework on 17 June 2026, the assembler, the Masori assembler and both assembler max capes break instead of being deleted, even above level 20 Wilderness.
Ultimate ironmen: how to store it
The wiki gives UIMs two ways to bank the assembler's effect. Make the assembler max cape, which counts as a max cape on the POH cape rack, or use a Vorkath's head on a ranging cape for a storable cape with the assembler's ammo saving. See our UIM guide for the rest of the storage tricks.
The Ranging Cape at 99
The ranging cape gives the accumulator's 72% ammo saving with no Animal Magnetism needed. Use a Vorkath's head on it to raise that to the assembler's 80%. You can't use an assembler instead, and the head is consumed. The upgrade then applies to every ranging cape and max cape you own or buy later. The cape does not gain the assembler's +8 Ranged attack or +2 Ranged Strength, and metal bodies interfere with it just as they do with the devices. At 99 you need a second head if you want both an assembler and an upgraded skillcape.
Dizana's Quiver and the Blessed Quiver
Dizana's quiver is the best-in-slot ranged cape. It is guaranteed for beating Sol Heredit, the twelfth and final wave of the Fortis Colosseum in Varlamore (Children of the Sun required), and needs 75 Ranged to wear.
| Ava's assembler | Dizana's quiver (uncharged) | Dizana's quiver (charged) or blessed |
|---|
| Ranged level | 70 | 75 | 75 |
| Ranged attack | +8 | +18 | +28 for arrows and bolts |
| Ranged Strength | +2 | +3 | +4 for arrows and bolts |
| Ammo saved | 80% | 80% after the Ava upgrade | 80% after the Ava upgrade |
| Metal body interference | Yes | No (for the Ava effect) | No (for the Ava effect) |
| Extra ammo slot | No | Yes, arrows or bolts | Yes, arrows or bolts |
- Charging: sunfire splinters give the quiver Dizana's Sunfire: +10 Ranged accuracy and +1 Ranged Strength on arrows and bolts fired from either ammo slot. It holds up to 20,000 charges, and each shot has a 1/3 chance to use one. Sunfire does nothing for blowpipe darts, chinchompas or the Bow of Faerdhinen.
- The Ava upgrade: after Animal Magnetism, bring the quiver and your assembler or accumulator (or their max cape versions) to Ava. She adds that device's ammo saving to the quiver without taking the device, and the effect covers every quiver you own now or later. A ranging cape only gives the quiver the accumulator's rate. For 80% she has to see an Ava's assembler, which is why ironmen still need a Vorkath's head even if they plan to go straight to the quiver.
- Blessing: use the quiver on a Shrine of Ralos with 150,000 sunfire splinters to make the blessed quiver, which has Dizana's Sunfire permanently and can become Dizana's max cape. Splinters you charge into the quiver count towards the 150,000. The wiki warns that fully uncharging it by hand resets that progress, though running out of charges in normal use does not.
- Splinter sources: the Colosseum, hunting sunlight antelope, the Hueycoatl and moon key chests. Minimus also gives 4,000 splinters for each spare quiver.
- Death in the Colosseum: the wiki marks it as a dangerous instance. Your grave appears in the lobby, and until you have completed 100 waves the reclaim fee is cut by 75%, up to 125,000 coins. The Colosseum is not on the Hardcore Ironman safe-death list.
Which cape when
| You have | Wear |
|---|
| Animal Magnetism done, under 50 Ranged | Ava's attractor |
| 50 to 69 Ranged, or no Dragon Slayer II yet | Ava's accumulator |
| Dragon Slayer II and 70+ Ranged | Ava's assembler; get the head even if the quiver is your goal |
| 75+ Ranged and a Colosseum clear | Dizana's quiver, upgraded at Ava with the assembler; charge it with splinters when you have them |
| 150,000 splinters to spare | The blessed quiver |
2025 and 2026 Changes
As of October 2026, neither the three device pages nor the wiki's Ava's device page lists a change to stats or ammo rates in 2025 or 2026. The last change to what they recover was javelins becoming recoverable on 29 May 2024. What changed around them:
- 23 July 2025, Varlamore: The Final Dawn: Lunami's Axe Shop in Auburnvale opened. At 520 coins it is the easiest mithril axe for Animal Magnetism.
- 6 August 2025: Perdu applying a Trouver parchment to Dizana's quiver no longer wipes its blessing progress. Earlier, on 5 March 2025, charging the quiver started counting towards the blessing.
- 19 November 2025, Sailing: small salvage, from shipwrecks at 15 Sailing, gives iron bars at 1/34.42, and the wiki now lists it as an iron bar source for the quest.
- 18 March 2026, Boat Combat Fixes: Ava now gives a ballistic attractor schematic to players who have finished Animal Magnetism and Pandemonium. The ballistic attractor is a boat facility that recovers 60% of the cannonballs your boat's cannons fire. It needs 50 Sailing and 44 Construction, and you build it from 10 mahogany planks, 5,000 water runes, 1,000 law runes, 5 lead bars and 5 steel bars. See the Sailing guide.
- 17 June 2026, Trouver System Rework: the assembler, Masori assembler and both assembler max capes now break, rather than being lost, on a Wilderness death above level 20. The locked blessed quiver also gained broken and mangled versions.
- 19 August 2026: the blessed quiver was renamed from "Blessed dizana's quiver" to "Blessed Dizana's quiver".
- Gear progression for where each ranged cape sits in the slot-by-slot table.
- Quest order for Animal Magnetism and the Dragon Slayer II chain.

- Fletching guide and Smithing guide for making your own steel and mithril arrows.
