Hardcore Worlds opened on 4 November 2026 and by midnight the community had logged 3,114 deaths. Almost none of them were to bosses. They were to level 50 spiders, level 26 jail guards and a quest most people finish at level 3. This guide is the first 20 hours or so of a Hardcore Worlds character, written the way we write HCIM advice: assume one life, and assume the disconnect is coming.
It covers what is different from a Hardcore Ironman (a lot: you have a Grand Exchange), what the launch-day data says actually kills people, and a route that avoids all of it. The rules themselves (worlds, reset vs transfer, the full safe and unsafe lists) live on the Hardcore Worlds hub.
Before you leave Death's Office
You arrive in Death's Office with starter gear and one escape crystal. Do not walk out until the crystal is configured, because the first death most people suffer is the one they are not at the keyboard for.
How the escape crystal actually triggers
It does not save you from a bad fight. It fires when you take damage after a period of no input. No input means no typing, no clicking, no mouse movement, no camera movement. That is what a disconnect, a crash or a phone call looks like to the server. Right-click the crystal, choose Configure, and set the timer. It fires immediately on damage after a login or world hop, it never fires while you are moving, and when it fires it now clears poison, burns and every other status effect.
The two settings that matter:
- Timer: 10 to 15 seconds for anything that can kill you. The range is 2 to 300 seconds. Short is right because every second of lag past the timer is a second of a monster hitting you.
- Raise it, or switch auto-AFK off, when you are deliberately AFK on things that cannot kill you (sand crabs, ammonite crabs, a safespot). Hits of zero count as damage, so a crab AFK with a 15-second timer eats a 10,000-coin crystal every time you tab out.
You can also wear it in the ring slot with the ring of life option, which teleports you below 10% Hitpoints like a ring of life. Worn that way it cannot teleport you out of raids and the big minigames, but those are all real deaths here anyway. Early on, when you own no other ring, wear it. Once you have a real ring of life (43 Crafting for the diamond ring, 57 Magic to enchant, or just buy one), move the crystal back to the inventory and let it do the disconnect job.
Nothing else in the office costs money you have. More crystals are 10,000 coins each from Death. Note where the mirror is: it opens your Death Report, a summary of the character's progress.
You are not an ironman
This is the part HCIM veterans get wrong on reflex. A Hardcore Worlds character is a main. You can buy iron armour, a stack of trout and a pile of big bones from the Grand Exchange before every dangerous task, and you should. The economy is only days old and prices swing hard, but a few hundred coins of food is still the cheapest insurance in the game. Equally, every death deletes your gravestone from the economy, so do not carry wealth around.
The launch-day death chart
Reddit user cipherhub compiled the death broadcasts from a RuneLite chat log between launch and midnight. Of 3,114 deaths, 2,253 were to NPCs outside the Wilderness, 343 to NPCs inside it, 277 to other players and 241 had no named killer. These are the five things that did most of the killing, and every one of them is on the standard new-account route.
| Killer | Deaths | Combat level | Max hit | Where you meet it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Giant spider | 269 | 50 | 7 | Stronghold of Security floor 3 (Pit of Pestilence), Varrock Sewers |
| Moss Guardian | 146 | 84 | 14 | Glarial's Tomb during Waterfall Quest, where you are unarmed |
| Jail guard | 144 | 26 | 3 | Draynor Village jail, during Prince Ali Rescue |
| Dark wizard | 105 | 7 to 23 | 6 | The stone circle south of Varrock, the Draynor crossroads |
| Witch's experiment | 85 | 19 to 53 | 5 | The Witch's House basement |
Victims of giant spiders averaged total level 50. Victims of jail guards averaged 45. Further down the chart, fire giants in the Waterfall Dungeon were killing characters averaging total level 137. The pattern is obvious: people ran the normal efficient early game at level 3 with 10 Hitpoints and no food, because that is how you play it on an account with a gravestone.
Hour one: safe quests and 5,000 coins
Start exactly like an ironman does, because these are free experience with no combat:
- Cook's Assistant, Sheep Shearer, Rune Mysteries, X Marks the Spot (it is also the first Reaper's Raffle quest entry and a free step toward 10 Quest Points).
- The Restless Ghost is safe at the graveyard, but picking up the skull in the Wizards' Tower basement spawns a level 22 skeleton that attacks you. Grab the skull and run for the ladder; do not fight it at level 3.
- Pick up the Stronghold of Security floor 1 and floor 2 rewards: 2,000 coins from the Gift of Peace and 3,000 from the Grain of Plenty. Floor 1 (Vault of War) is a multi-combat area full of goblins, wolves and minotaurs that are only aggressive to low levels in places; floor 2 (Catacomb of Famine) has aggressive flesh crawlers and zombies, but flesh crawlers hit 1 and the route is short. Answer the questions, open the chest, leave.
Stop there. Do not go down to floor 3 yet. That is where the 5,000-coin Box of Health is, and it is also where the level 50 giant spiders live. They are aggressive to every combat level, they hit up to 7, and there are 45 of them. With 10 Hitpoints you are two hits from Death's Office.
The Stronghold floor 3 trip
Come back for the Pit of Pestilence once you have 20 or more Hitpoints, which is about combat level 15 to 20, and a full inventory of food. Trout or salmon from the Grand Exchange is cheap even on this economy; failing that, cook your own.
- Set the crystal timer to 10 seconds before you enter.
- Keep run on. Giant spiders are single-combat on this floor, so only one hits you at a time, but they stack up at doors while you answer the questions. Eat up before each door, not after.
- The Box of Health at the end gives 5,000 coins and a full stat restore. Take the portal out.
- Floor 4 (Sepulchre of Death) only gives the fancy and fighting boots. The ankous there are level 75 to 98 and hit 8. Leave it for later; there is no coin reward.
That 10,000 coins is your first spare escape crystal. Buy it before anything else. Jagex priced the crystal at 10,000 precisely so the Stronghold pays for one.
43 Prayer is still the first real goal
Protection prayers are the whole HCIM playbook and nothing about Hardcore Worlds changes that. What changes is how you get there: you can buy bones. Big bones and dragon bones are on the Grand Exchange, and on a fresh economy other players are selling them because they need coins for gear. Check the price against what you can gather yourself before committing.

Safer sources if you would rather not spend:
- Big bones from hill giants in the Edgeville Dungeon. They are level 28, hit up to 8 and are aggressive to low levels, so this is a 30-plus Hitpoints job with food, not a level 3 job. Each big bone is 15 Prayer XP buried.
- Ensouled heads need the Arceuus spellbook and Magic levels a fresh account does not have. Shelve them until after 43.
- Quest XP: The Restless Ghost (1,125 Prayer XP), Priest in Peril (1,406) and Recruitment Drive (1,000) get a fresh account most of the way to 30 before any bones are buried. Priest in Peril has a level 30 monk and a temple of level 25 monks; bring food.
Do not bury bones at a gilded altar in someone's house. Dying inside a player-owned house is a real death on Hardcore Worlds, and the altar needs no combat anyway, so it is fine to use; just never fight anything in a POH here. The point is that the dungeon in a stranger's house is not a safe place to test a weapon.
