OSRS Hardcore Worlds vs Hardcore Ironman: Death Rules, Trading, Resets and Which One to Make

Hardcore Worlds vs HCIM compared rule by rule: the two death lists side by side, what happens after you die, trading and the fresh economy, hiscores, membership, and which mode suits which player in 2026.

Jagex released Hardcore Worlds on 4 November 2026, and the name has caused a week of confusion. It is not Hardcore Ironman on new servers. It is a different mode with a different death list, a different account type and a different thing that happens when you die. This page puts the two side by side so you can pick, or so you can stop assuming your HCIM habits transfer. They mostly do not.

Everything here was checked against the OSRS Wiki and the official newsposts on 6 November 2026. The Hardcore Worlds rules are days old and already being hotfixed, so the Hardcore Worlds hub carries the running changes.

Death rules side by side

This is the part that actually matters. Hardcore Worlds copy the Hardcore Group Ironman ruleset, which treats almost every minigame as a real death. Jagex's own words: expect 99% of deaths to land you back in Death's Office.

Safe in both

Dying here keeps your status in either mode:

  • Castle Wars
  • Clan Wars
  • Soul Wars
  • Emir's Arena
  • TzHaar Fight Pit
  • The Fremennik Trials, Koschei the Deathless (for Hardcore Worlds only the fourth phase of the duel)
  • Replay of the Galvek fight
  • Replay of the Glough fight
  • Zulrah, the resurrection reward from the Western Provinces elite diary
  • TzHaar Fight Cave, the resurrection reward from the Karamja elite diary
  • Last Man Standing (safe for both on paper, but disabled on Hardcore Worlds at launch)

Safe for HCIM, a real death on Hardcore Worlds

Every one of these is a free death for a Hardcore Ironman and ends your run on a Hardcore World:

  • Barbarian Assault
  • Camelot training room
  • Chambers of Xeric
  • Dream World during Lunar Diplomacy
  • Fishing Trawler
  • The Inferno
  • Magic Training Arena
  • Nightmare Zone
  • Pest Control
  • Any death inside a player-owned house
  • PvM Arena
  • TzHaar Fight Cave (outside the diary resurrection)
  • Random events
  • Rogues' Den maze

The reflexes that will get a Hardcore Worlds character killed

HCIM players learn to treat the Fight Caves, Nightmare Zone and Pest Control as free. An HCIM learns the fire cape by dying to Jad a few times. None of that works on Hardcore Worlds: the first Fight Caves completion on the mode (HCW Deviate, launch day) was a genuine one-life Jad. The escape crystal does teleport you out of the Fight Caves, the Inferno, Pest Control, Barbarian Assault, Chambers of Xeric, the Theatre of Blood and Tombs of Amascut, which is the only reason those are survivable on a disconnect.

Unsafe in both

Everything else: every quest boss, every slayer task, every raid, the Gauntlet, Perilous Moons, the Fortis Colosseum, Sailing deaths aboard ship, Wintertodt at zero warmth, the Hallowed Sepulchre, Tempoross poison, and the whole Wilderness. The 2026 additions on the HCIM page (The Blood Moon Rises checkpoint deaths, Wyrmscraig) apply to both.

What happens when you die

Hardcore Ironman. You get the "You have fallen as a Hardcore Ironman" message, your name is struck through on the HCIM hiscores with your XP frozen there, and you carry on as a normal ironman on the same account with your gravestone waiting for you. Nothing is wiped. There is no second chance at hardcore status on that account.

Hardcore Worlds. Death is processed normally first (keep three items, four with Protect Item, standard Wilderness rules in PvP). Then you are sent to Death's Office and choose:

  • Reset: everything on the character is wiped, including the protected items, quests, stats and bank. You start again from Tutorial Island as a fresh character with the same name, as many times as you like. Bank PIN and settings survive. The Stronghold of Security coins go on a three-day cooldown so a reset loop cannot farm them.
  • Transfer: the character leaves Hardcore Worlds forever and becomes a normal main-game account with its stats, quests, bank, protected items and all other storage intact.

In both cases the gravestone is deleted. That is the mechanic that drives the economy: every death removes items from a world where supply only comes from living players.

The reset is the real difference

An HCIM death is a one-way door. A Hardcore Worlds death is a loop. Jagex built the mode around trying again ("try, and try, and try again"), the Reaper's Raffle entries carry over between deaths, and the broadcast rules were tuned for people dying repeatedly. If what you love about HCIM is that the stakes are permanent, Hardcore Worlds will feel lighter than it looks. If what you hate about HCIM is that a disconnect ends a year of play with no recourse, the reset is the answer.

Trading and the economy

This is where the modes stop being comparable. A Hardcore Ironman gathers everything. A Hardcore Worlds character buys what it needs from a Grand Exchange that opened empty on 4 November and is filled only by other one-life players.

What that means in practice:

  • You can buy a rune scimitar, adamant armour, a ring of life and a stack of food before a dangerous quest. On HCIM that is weeks of play; here it is whatever the market charges, and in week one the market charges a lot because almost nothing exists yet.
  • You can do group PvM with anyone on the world. Hardcore Group Ironmen cannot even do that with people outside their group.
  • Gathering skills are worth far more than in the main game. Fishing, mining, woodcutting and runecrafting are the early money, which is the ironman money-making playbook with a buyer attached.
  • Bonds exist on the Hardcore Worlds exchange like any other item but their price there has nothing to do with the main-game price. Membership for the character can also be applied from a bond held by another character on the same Jagex Account, an option added on 3 November 2026.

Jagex removed roughly 103 million of 115.5 million smuggled coins within the first few hours of launch, and is still tracing the remaining 12 million. That is the scale the whole economy is working at.

Account and hiscores

  • HCIM is a flag on an account that can be made on any world, including free-to-play. The HCIM hiscores are the long-running table with the struck-through names.
  • Hardcore Worlds needs a brand-new character that opts in through Death's Delegate on Tutorial Island, and that character needs membership. It is tracked on a separate Hardcore Worlds hiscores table under Game Modes, which restarts from zero on a reset and ends on a transfer.
  • The two can share a Jagex Account. Death's Office is un-instanced and is the only place a Hardcore Worlds character and a main-game character can be in the same room, which is how friends gift membership or recruit for a clan.
  • Hardcore Worlds have their own in-game broadcasts for world firsts and deaths. HCIM has neither.

Which one to make

Make a Hardcore Ironman if:

  • You want the self-sufficient challenge, where the fire cape means you gathered everything for it.
  • You want to play on the same worlds as your existing friends and clan.
  • You want the account to go on as an ironman after a death instead of being wiped or leaving.
  • You want the more forgiving death list: Fight Caves, Inferno and Nightmare Zone practice are free.
  • You play free-to-play, or you want to be on the hiscores table that has a decade of history on it.

Make a Hardcore Worlds character if:

  • You want permadeath with a real economy, and you like the idea that a million coins is worth something again.
  • You want to do raids and group bosses with other people on one life.
  • You like the reset loop and the idea of a run rather than an account.
  • You want a fresh-start server where every single player began on 4 November 2026 at the same pace, with no boosts and no imported wealth.
  • You want to be part of the Reaper's Raffle and the world-first race during November.

Make both if: you already have an HCIM and want somewhere to spend the next month. They sit on the same Jagex Account, the bond-membership transfer makes the second character cheap to member, and nothing about either account affects the other.

Whichever you pick, the first thing to do is the same: configure the escape crystal before you fight anything. The Hardcore Worlds survival guide covers the setup and the first 20 hours; the HCIM guide covers the safe-training route for the ironman.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Hardcore Worlds and Hardcore Ironman?

Both give you one life, but a Hardcore Ironman is a self-sufficient ironman on normal worlds with a generous list of safe deaths, and becomes a regular ironman when it dies. A Hardcore Worlds character is a normal main account on 32 dedicated worlds with a separate economy, can trade and use the Grand Exchange, uses the stricter Hardcore Group Ironman death list, and on death either resets completely or transfers to the main game.

Is Hardcore Worlds harder than HCIM?

The death rules are stricter: the Fight Caves, Inferno, Nightmare Zone, Pest Control, Barbarian Assault, Chambers of Xeric, random events and your own house are all real deaths on Hardcore Worlds but safe for a Hardcore Ironman. Jagex calls it slightly more deadly. Everything else is easier, because you can buy gear, food, potions and bones from other players instead of gathering them, and you can do group content with anyone.

Can a Hardcore Ironman play on Hardcore Worlds?

No. Hardcore Worlds require a brand-new character that has not finished Tutorial Island, and characters on them are main accounts. You cannot be any kind of ironman on a Hardcore World, and an existing HCIM cannot convert or transfer in.

What happens after you die in each mode?

A dead Hardcore Ironman becomes a regular ironman with its gravestone intact and keeps playing on the same account. A dead Hardcore Worlds character goes to Death's Office and must either reset, which wipes stats, quests, bank and protected items for an unlimited fresh start, or transfer to the main game permanently with its bank and protected items. In both Hardcore Worlds outcomes the gravestone is deleted.

Which should I make, HCIM or Hardcore Worlds?

Make a Hardcore Ironman if you want the self-sufficient challenge, want to play on normal worlds with your existing friends, or want to keep the account as an ironman after a death. Make a Hardcore Worlds character if you want permadeath with a real economy and group PvM, want the reset loop, or are drawn to a fresh-start server where everyone began on 4 November 2026 at the same pace.
